Gum Arabic as novel anti-oxidant agent in sickle cell anemia, phase II trial

چکیده
BACKGROUND Sickle cell anemia patients suffer from oxidative stress due to chronic inflammation and self-oxidation of sickle hemoglobin (Hb S). Chronic oxidative stress contributes to endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and multiple organ damage in sickle cell disease (SCD). Thus, antioxidant medication may favorably influence the disease. Gum Arabic (GA), edible, dried, gummy exudates from Acacia Senegal tree, has been claimed to act as an anti-oxidant and cytoprotective agent, protecting against experimental hepatic, renal and cardiac toxicities in rats. We hypothesized that regular intake of GA increases anti-oxidant capacity and reduce oxidative stress. METHODS Forty-seven patients (5-42 years) carrying hemoglobin SS were recruited. Patients received 30 g/day GA for 12 weeks. Total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels were measured by spectrophotometric methods before and after GA intake. Complete blood count was measured by sysmex. RESULTS Gum Arabic significantly increased TAC level P < 0.001and decreased the oxidative markers MDA (P < 0.05) and H2O2 (P < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS GA has potent anti- oxidative properties in sickle cell anemia. The anti-oxidant effect of GA may thus favorably influence the clinical condition of this and further diseases characterized by oxidative stress. Gum Arabic as fetal hemoglobin inducing agent in sickle cell anemia; in vivo study
BACKGROUND High levels of fetal haemoglobin (HbF) decrease sickle cell anaemia (SCA) severity and leads to improved survival. According to in vivo and in vitro studies, butyrate increases HbF production. Its utilization in clinical practice is hampered, however, by its short half-life. Serum butyrate concentrations could be enhanced by colonic bacterial fermentation of Gum Arabic (GA), edible, ...

Background: Hemoglobin S arises is the result of a point mutation (A-T) in the sixth codon on the -globin gene on chromosome 11 causing sickle cell anemia. The presence of fetal hemoglobin in infancy plays a relatively protective role for vaso-occlusive symptoms that are the major contributor for the morbidity and mortality among patients with sickle cell anemia. hydroxyurea, an s-phase-specif...

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia is one of the most prevalent hereditary disorders with prominent morbidity and mortality. With this disorder oxidative, phenomena play a significant role in its pathophysiology. One of the garlic (Allium sativum L.) formulations, aged garlic extract (AGE), has been reported to exert an anti-oxidant effect in vitro, we have evaluated the anti-oxidant effect of AGE ...

Diabetes is a common metabolic disease in the world that has many adverse effects. Olibanum gum resin (from trees of the genus Boswellia) has traditionally been used in the treatment of various diseases such as diabetes. The aim of this study was the comparison of Olibanum gum resin effect with placebo on the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Inclusion criteria was diabetic patients with fasting bl...
متن کاملAva II Site as a Marker of β-Globin Gene Polymorphism, among Normal and Sickle Cell Patients in Iran
The restriction enzyme Ava II detects the base change of the intervening sequence II (IVS II) which is used as one of the markers of β-globin gene polymorphism. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of the Ava II site on the β-globin gene among normal people and patients with sickle cell syndrome (SCS) in Iran. DNA fragments containing the IVS II region of the β-globin gene from...
